Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Moore Reaches 650 Career Wins with Islanders Tennis as Teams Sweep Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – The winningest coach in the Southland Conference and in Islanders Athletics history, Steve Moore of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs notched his 650th career win as the head coach of Islanders Tennis Thursday with a pair of wins over Texas Lutheran.

Moore entered the day at win No. 648 with the Islanders and reached the 650-milestone after the men (17-4) defeated Texas Lutheran 7-0 while the women (20-2) posted a 5-0 victory over the Bulldogs in the teams' final regular season road matches.

Moore is the first coach in Islanders Athletics to reach 650 as an Islanders' head coach. With his 35 wins during his time at SMU, he now records 685 career wins as a Division I head coach.

"It's been such a blessing and a privilege to lead these high-character Islanders! I am grateful to God for the opportunity to impact their lives and the special Islanders Tennis culture, camaraderie, and relationships have just been priceless. The support we receive from the leadership at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is the best any coach could ever ask for, and is truly the foundation that allows us to succeed. I also coach with the best coaching staff in the nation and have for a long time! These coaches have been huge in our teams' success and elevating the lives of these kids. I can honestly say I go to work every day still so excited to see these special, high-character players and coaches, and any result we have had had is a symptom of the players consistently choosing the character road! Islander family always!" said Moore.

His journey began in 1998 when Moore left Texas Tech to become the head coach at A&M-Corpus Christi and did what few coaches have done - start an NCAA Division I program from scratch. Moore immediately put the Islanders on the map with a 45-17 record and 15-3 SLC mark in the first three years. He was one of the youngest NCAA Division I head coaches in the country at age 26.

Moore left the Island when SMU offered him the head women's coaching job in 2000 where he led the Mustangs to 35 wins before heading to Texas A&M in 2004. After two seasons with the Aggies, he returned to A&M-Corpus Christi in 2006 where he has created and extended a historic run.

Now, nearly 20 years later, he has 650 wins under his belt between the Islanders men's and women's tennis programs. That success has helped produce 33 Southland Conference championships, with the men (22) and women (11) each holding the league records for most titles, and has led him to 16 NCAA Tournaments and 14 SLC Coach of the Year awards.

In the 61-year history of the conference, Moore's 16 NCAA tournaments at the same school rank him first all-time in Southland Conference history for all coaches and all sports. He surpassed Lamar baseball coach Jim Gilligan (11) in 2021 after both the Islanders men's & women's tennis programs reached the NCAA Tournament. His SLC Coach of the Year awards also represent the most in the league across any coach and sport.

The teams are both still in contention for another championship this year, with only three conference matches remaining in the regular season. The men are undefeated 2-0 while the women are just one match back from first-place with a 5-1 SLC record.

They will continue those campaigns toward another title this weekend when they host UIW Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. They then welcome Lamar on Monday before rounding out the schedule next Saturday against UTRGV.
