FRISCO, Texas – Senior
Nathan Favier of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team capped a champion season being named the SLC Newcomer of the Year under the guidance of this year's Coach of the Year
Steve Moore as the league office announced postseason awards Tuesday.
Favier is the fourth SLC Newcomer of the Year in program history, and first since 2011 when former assistant coach and player Aurelien Tave won. He additionally earned First Team recognition with partner
Matthieu Coignet at No. 3 doubles.
Joining him in the postseason awards was the duos of
Etienne Marty/
Omar Suarez at No. 2 doubles on the First Team, while Suarez also earned a spot on the Second Team at No. 2 singles.
Josef Zapletal took the First Team spot for No. 6 singles.
Moore was additionally named the SLC Coach of the Year for the 15
th time as the head coach of Islanders Tennis. It is the most honors by any coach across all teams and sports in the Southland Conference.
Favier made his presence known in his first year with the Islanders, starting off with winning the SLC Individual Championship in the fall for singles play. He carried that into the season, going 4-1 from No. 1 singles in conference play to help the Islanders win the regular season title.
He and Coignet then also went perfect at No. 3 doubles with a 5-0 record, including clinching the doubles point against UTRGV that secured the regular season title.
Suarez/Marty also got tabbed to the First Team, grabbing the No. 2 doubles spot after a 4-1 conference record. Suarez was then recognized on the Second Team with a 3-2 record at No. 2 singles in league play.
Zapletal held down court six in singles play, hoisting an undefeated 4-0 conference mark, each one coming in straight sets for the First Team recognition.
The Islanders went undefeated 6-0 in the conference schedule this year for their 13
th regular season title. The men have a total of 23 titles now as one of the most winning teams in the league across all sports.
As the No. 1 seed, they will be striving for their second title of the year in the form of their 11
th SLC Tournament championship and equal number of trips to the NCAAs. The Islanders will get started with the conference tournament Thursday at 10 a.m. against No. 8 Nicholls.
