CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team got locked into a defensive clash with Nicholls in game three of the conference series, and unfortunately came up short in a 2-1 decision Saturday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (9-32, 3-18 SLC) and the Colonels (25-20, 17-4 SLC) found themselves knotted a 1-1 after the first inning and the rest of the game moved along quietly except for the visitors squeezing another on the board in the third to ultimately end with the 2-1 advantage.
The teams were near even in hits with Nicholls holding just an 8-6 edge as neither team could jump on the other's pitcher too much.
A pair of singles plated a Nicholls player in the first, but the Islanders were able to respond quickly in the bottom frame.
Mimi Thornton saw the first pitch and doubled down the right field line before advancing to third on the base hit from
Paolina Baez. The double steal worked out as scripted as Baez drew the throw to second while Thornton ran home to cover the deficit for the 1-1 tie.
The Colonels were able to get another past the Islanders in the top of the third and facing two runners on,
Malia Williams entered the circle in relief and erased the threat with two quick outs.
Williams went on to throw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, only conceding one hit during her outing. However, the Islanders couldn't back her offensively as the third inning score of 2-1 held to the end with Nicholls on top.
Monee Montilla also knocked a hit today, recording one in each game of the series this weekend. She is now on a four-game hitting streak.
On deck:
The Islanders will stay home for another three-game series next weekend when they host SFA. It will be their final home event of the year and second to last conference series as they will finish on the road at Northwestern State April 25-26.
