Late Sparks by SFA Cause Trouble for Islanders in Doubleheader

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi saw early leads diminish in Friday's doubleheader as SFA scored in the final innings of both games to win 2-1 and 4-2 at Chapman Field.

The Islanders (9-34, 3-20 SLC) scored first in both contests, plating one run in the bottom of the first each time. The slight lead held until the final innings, with SFA tying game one in the sixth to force extras before scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Game two ended similarly, the Islanders holding a 2-0 lead until the Lumberjacks plated a whopping four in the seventh to steal the 4-2 victory.

The Islanders stayed toe-to-toe with SFA in game one despite being outhit 12-3, as the visitors were the ones that needed to force extras. An early three mistakes from SFA helped Paolina Baez make her way around the bases after a stolen base wreaked havoc in the field as two throwing errors on the play scored Baez.

The 1-0 lead was holding as Malia Williams shut down SFA through five innings. A lead off walk in the sixth, however, ended up being the equalizer as a pair of singles drove the tying run in.

Neither team could go ahead in the seventh, forcing extras where SFA was able to squeeze in the game-winning run.

Game two had the Islanders outhitting SFA 7-5. Mimi Thornton went 3-for-3 at the plate today including fairing one down the right field line for the RBI triple which scored Baez for the second time today in the first inning.

Another triple from the Islanders came in the fifth when Ripley Welker found the gap in left center before another throwing error from SFA scored her after she slid in safe for the 2-0 lead.

That cushion stayed entering the seventh when the Islanders needed just three outs, but it turned disastrous as SFA bombarded the plate for four runs to take away a 4-2 win.

On deck:
The Islanders will have their final home game of the year tomorrow in game three of the series with SFA, set for 12 p.m. The team will also hold a special senior day presentation pregame to honor this year's senior class.
