Baseball Takes on Houston in Power Conference Road Matchup

HOUSTON, Texas – Fresh off a win in their most recent game over the weekend, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team hits the road for a big nonconference test, traveling to take on Houston on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The Islanders (10-20, 2-10 SLC) embark on their trip looking to carry over the momentum from a dramatic game in their series finale against rival UTRGV on Sunday, when they took home a 3-2 win on a walk-off double in the ninth inning off the bat of junior Christian Smith-Johnson. The victory snapped what had been a six-game losing streak for them, with their most recent win before that coming on March 19 at Prairie View A&M, and it put them on the verge of clinching the season-long South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.

Despite holding just a 4-7 record in the all-time series against Houston (15-12, 3-6 Big 12), the Islanders were able to take down the Cougars in two of their three most recent meetings, including a 12-2 run-rule win in the most recent showdown in 2023 during that year's Kleberg Bank College Classic. That game saw an excellent performance from senior Chance Reisdorph, who went 2-4 at the plate with a triple, a double and three RBI. The only other member of this year's roster to feature back then was Smith-Johnson, who also showed out to the tune of three hits in three at-bats with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases.

The matchup against the Cougars will be the ninth against a power conference opponent for the Islanders so far in 2025. They currently hold a 1-7 record in such games, falling to Kansas in four games, Michigan State, No. 5 Texas and Texas A&M but earning a win against No. 14 UCLA back on February 21. In the contest against the Bruins, senior Austin Russell came through with the big hit, breaking a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with a two-out, two-RBI double that proved to be the game-winning knock.

Wednesday's game can be watched live on ESPN+ with Jeremy Branham (play-by-play) and Kyle Rogers (analyst) on the call. The live stats will also be available to follow along as they happen.
