CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team prepares for one of its most challenging stretches of the season coming up this week, embarking on a run of five straight games in as many days while hitting the road for the first four of them.
The Islanders (6-7) open up the slate of games with their first conference series of the season, traveling to Thibodaux to take on Nicholls (5-9, 0-3 SLC) in a three-game set over the weekend. The Colonels come into play having lost seven games in a row, most recently starting their own Southland schedule on the wrong end of a sweep at the hands of McNeese before dropping a pair of midweek contests on the road at Louisiana Tech. A&M-Corpus Christi did not fair well in the matchup between the two last year, dropping all three games of their series at Chapman Field and then falling again in the first round of the conference tournament in Hammond.
After this set, the Islanders then turn around for a pair of non-conference games to start next week, first squaring off against Rice (2-10) in Houston on Monday at 6 p.m. before then turning around and facing Texas Southern (4-9) back at home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The team took on both of these teams in midweek contests during the 2024 campaign, falling to the former 5-3 despite a three-hit day by current senior
Isaac Webb while emerging victorious against the latter 8-4 behind multi-hit days from seniors
Drake Kerr and
Josh Blount.
During these five contests, the Islanders will be looking to rebound after seeing their three-game winning streak snapped in their last taste of game action on Tuesday, when they were taken down on the road against No. 12 Texas. After falling behind by 4-0 early on, A&M-Corpus Christi rallied for a five-run fourth to take its first lead of the evening, but the Longhorns answered back with 11 unanswered runs of their own to hand the team a 15-5 loss in eight innings. Webb did manage to lead the team with a pair of RBIs despite this, while senior
Cade Sanchez continued his hot start to the season by reaching base three times in his four plate appearances.
