Islanders Concede Game Two Late to Drop Doubleheader to Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team tried rebounding after dropping game one of the doubleheader 9-1 to Southeastern but the defending conference champions took a late lead in the sixth inning of game two to take it 5-2 Thursday night at North Oak Park.

The Islanders (9-22, 3-8 SLC) didn't see much offensive production through the first two games of the series with Southeastern (28-8, 10-1 SLC) which wasn't helped by their six combined fielding errors on the day. It included the costly error in the bottom of the sixth in game two when an errant throw scored three Lady Lions which gave them their first lead of the contest at 5-2, the eventual final score.

Although A&M-Corpus Christi knocked six hits in the first game, only one would drive in a run which came in the third inning. After Karisa Lopez drew the lead-off walk and advanced on the base paths, CJ Castilla singled to left field deep enough for Lopez to round third and head home for the run.

It was one of three consecutive singles in that outing as Erynne Castillo and Paolina Baez followed her up with a base hit of their own, but the Islanders struggled to bring in their runners all game as Southeastern was efficient for the 9-1 win.

The second game had the Islanders strike first, with Castillo leading off with the walk. The intended sacrifice by Baez ended up in a scored run for the Islanders, and she reached base and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by the Lady Lions while Castillo ran home.

In scoring position, the squeeze play had Baez beat out the throw at home off Mimi Thornton's sac bunt for the 2-0 lead.

Kenda Winfrey then threw four scoreless frames in the circle and didn't concede an earned run at all through her complete game thrown, as it was three errors that led to Southeastern's five runs between the fifth and sixth innings for the lead reversal.

On deck:
Game three of the series will be played tomorrow at 12 p.m. to round out the road trip for the Islanders.
