FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team saw its final regular season tournament draw to a close Sunday, unfortunately falling to Northern Colorado 5-1 to conclude the five-game weekend.
The Islanders (6-14) saw another game playing from behind after Northern Colorado (7-10) managed to plate three early runs in the first. The Bears tacked on insurance runs in the third and sixth innings while A&M-Corpus Christi could only get one back in the top of the sixth.
It was all
Mimi Thornton today for the Islanders, as she saw an 0-1 count and swung away for the home run to dead center in the sixth. The homer is the first-ever in her career, helping her also earn her fifth RBI and second run of the season. She has already recorded her career-most of hits in a season with 12 now.
She is also on a six-game hitting streak, leading the team as the sole Islander hitting above .300 on the year at a .308 average.
Crystal Davila and
Zoey Stewart were the only other two to get a hit off Northern Colorado's pitcher. It was Davila's fourth hit of the weekend, as she is now on her own hitting streak of three games.
On deck:
The Islanders now turn towards conference play, with their opening series slated for next weekend at home against UIW. The two will play a doubleheader Friday before rounding out the three-game contest Saturday at Chapman Field.
