CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team looked to rebound in the second of two games today, but ultimately fell to UIW 15-2 and 3-1 to open the conference series Friday at Chapman Field.
Game one got away from the Islanders (6-16, 0-2 SLC) who regrouped for a tougher game two performance, but UIW (11-9, 2-0 SLC) still came out on top in the latter contest to sweep the doubleheader on the day.
It was a defensive struggle for A&M-Corpus Christi, who registered three fielding errors in both games which allowed the Cardinals to take advantage in opportune situations. It severely hindered them in the second game, with two of UIW's runs being ruled unearned which made up the difference in the finals score.
The first game had UIW jump quick, scoring three in the second inning. The Islanders were able to plate two in the third after
Paolina Baez edged one fair deep down the right field line for the 2-RBI triple. The team them seemed to knot the game up with the sacrifice fly scoring Baez, but replay overturned the call and the Islanders would be stranded at two runs the rest of the game.
The second game was more evened across the board, with the teams matching each other with six hits apiece. The Islanders struck first this time, with
Crystal Davila getting to second on the two-out double to the gap in right center.
Mimi Thornton then knocked hers over the infield for the RBI as the Islanders took the 1-0 lead.
UIW responded in the next frame, starting the second off with two runs. The latter was unearned due to A&M-Corpus Christi's first error of the game.
Two more errors by the Islanders' field in the sixth allowed another unearned run to cross home plate, proving insurance for UIW who finished the game up 3-1.
Karissa Lopez and
CJ Castilla each scored in the first game, both also registering a hit in their at-bats. Castilla was the lone Islanders to knock a hit in both games, who is now on a three-game streak of reaching base.
On deck:
The Islanders will look to salvage the series in game three tomorrow, with first pitch coming at 12 p.m. CT back at Chapman Field.
