Softball Drops First Two Games to East Texas A&M

COMMERCE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team couldn't get things going in its first road conference series of the season, falling in a pair of 9-1 decisions to East Texas A&M Friday at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.

The Islanders (7-18, 1-4 SLC) ran into a hot East Texas A&M (6-21, 2-3 SLC) squad who registered a minimum eight hits in each game and ran away in the fifth innings to enforce the run-rule both times. Meanwhile, the visiting squad could only knock six hits total in the doubleheader.

Monee Montilla accounted for two of those, seeing a hit in each game including an RBI double in the back half of the doubleheader which scored the lone run in that game. CJ Castilla was the runner who found home after she had drawn the lead-off walk in the top of the first.

Mimi Thornton also tallied an RBI off her hit, responsible for the Islanders' run in the first game. She singled up the middle during the fifth inning to score Karisa Lopez from second, who had reached base from a single to left field.

Isabella Hune and Madison Espinoza also knocked base-hits today.

The offense ended there for the Islanders, as they struggled to get on top of the East Texas A&M pitchers, each of whom threw a complete game.

It is the first time the Islanders dropped a game to East Texas A&M, making it the first time they've also dropped a conference series to the Lions. A&M-Corpus Christi still leads the all-time series 6-2.

The Islanders will now look to salvage the series in tomorrow's game three, with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. CT. Last week, the Islanders walked off UIW in game three to salvage that series at home.
