Baseball Resumes Southland Action in Home Series Against Northwestern State

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team resumes its run through Southland Conference play this upcoming weekend, playing host to Northwestern State in a three-game series at Chapman Field.

The Islanders (7-11, 0-3 SLC) return to action after one of their toughest stretches of the season this past week, playing a stretch of five consecutive games with the first four being away from home. They started this run out with their first conference series of the year against Nicholls, where they were swept by the Colonels in a three-game set in Thibodaux. They then bounced back with a big win over Rice in Houston on Monday to snap their skid before returning back to campus and falling to Texas Southern on Tuesday in a wild 14-13 game.

A&M-Corpus Christi will now try to get on the board with its first Southland win of the year against the Demons (9-7, 3-3 SLC), who come into play riding high after winning their last five games in a row and sweeping UIW in their most recent conference tilt last weekend. The Islanders got the upper hand in the last meeting between the two in April of last season, taking two of three in Natchitoches to win the series for the second year in a row. Current senior Isaac Webb was the catalyst for the team during these games, combining to go 7-14 with a home run, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Perhaps the most important development for the Islanders in their recent contests was the play of senior Trey Cruz and junior Christian Smith-Johnson, who both broke out of slumps and started tearing the cover off the ball to start the week. Cruz tallied three home runs in the two games against Rice and Texas Southern, smashing two in the first game and another in the second while also going 6-9 overall with seven RBIs. Smith-Johnson put up similar numbers, combining to tally four hits in the former and three in the latter to go along with three total RBIs himself.
