Box Score VICTORIA, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team could not carry the momentum from its recent hot stretch into its first road game of the 2025 season on Wednesday evening, going cold with the bats for most of the day and coming up short against the University of Houston-Victoria by a final score of 6-4.
The loss snapped what was a two-game winning streak for the Islanders (3-6), who came into play on Wednesday fresh off back-to-back victories over Washington State at Whataburger Field over the weekend. It was also their first defeat at the hands of the Jaguars (16-2) in nearly eight years, as they had won each of the previous five meetings dating back to March 29, 2017.
Despite what the final score would indicate, A&M-Corpus Christi actually got off to the quickest start possible, jumping on the scoreboard in the very first plate appearance of the evening. Doing the honors was senior
Isaac Webb, who came up and blasted a 3-2 pitch well over the wall in left field for a leadoff home run, his first longball of the season and just the fifth of his career with the Islanders.
This would be the only run that the Islanders would score a while, however, which allowed UHV to take a lead and then extend it as the game went on. The Jaguars first struck in the bottom of the second, getting their first run on an unorthodox play where designated hitter Jose Montanez homered but was called out after passing the runner previously on base and then adding on via an actual home run in the very next at-bat. They would add on more after this as well, scoring one in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend their lead up to 5-1.
The response from the Islanders finally came in the top of the eighth, when after Webb walked to lead off the inning and then stole second, senior
Cade Sanchez broke through with a base hit up the middle to bring in the team's second run of the evening. The rally would continue a few batters later, as after senior
Austin Russell was hit to put another runner on base, junior
Christian Smith-Johnson came up in his first at-bat of the day and laced a line drive the other way for a two-RBI single that cut the deficit down to just one.
A&M-Corpus Christi had a prime chance to tie or take the lead in the inning, getting the next two hitters on via the walk to load up the bases with two outs. A groundout
would cut the rally short, however, and after the Jaguars added an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame, the Islanders could not cash in on another pair of baserunners in the ninth and took home the loss as a result.
The best individual day from the Islanders came from Webb, who managed to reach base four times on the evening via the home run as well as three walks in a great showcase of his plate discipline at the top of the order. Sanchez tallied the only multi-hit performance of the game for the team, while Smith-Johnson did the same in the RBI column. One area that the team struggled in was in the field, as they committed a season-high four errors as opposed to just one from UHV on the other side.
The Islanders will now try to shake off the loss and prepare for their next series this weekend, returning home to take on Prairie View A&M in the first three games of the season at Chapman Field. The first game of that set is set to take place on Friday, with first pitch currently scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
