VICTORIA, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team hits the road for the first time in 2025 this week, heading north on Wednesday to take on the University of Houston-Victoria for a midweek contest at 6 p.m.
The Islanders (3-5) are coming off of a very impressive run of games this past weekend, picking up three wins in four tries against a trio of big-name programs. The team started things off with a signature victory in the opening game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic on Friday, downing UCLA 4-3 to pick up its first-ever win over the Bruins. After falling to Michigan State on Saturday, the team then went on to earn back-to-back wins over Washington State, coming from behind in the finale of the Kleberg Classic on Sunday before turning around and winning the rematch by a final of 8-2 just one day later.
A&M-Corpus Christi was lifted by some great performances from the middle of its lineup, starting with senior
Austin Russell, who went 6-15 at the plate with four doubles and his first home run of the season on Sunday against the Cougars. Beyond Russell, senior
Cade Sanchez picked up four hits in 13 at-bats with a double and two RBI, and junior
Jackson Smith drove home four runs while notching at least one hit in each of the four games and multiple knocks in the last two. In total, the team plated 23 runs over the weekend, which came just a week after scoring just six over a four-game series against Kansas to open the year.
As for Wednesday's matchup, the Islanders square off against a Jaguars (15-2) team that received votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll back in November. The two teams played in a midweek contest at Chapman Field last year, with A&M-Corpus Christi picking up a 14-1 run-rule victory in seven innings. Four different players returning to this year's team – seniors
Isaac Webb,
Josh Blount and
Mason Persons and junior
Christian Smith-Johnson, put together multi-hit performances in that one, which helped the team pick up its 15
th win in 17 matchups in the all-time series.
