Islanders Tennis Heads to UTRGV for South Texas Showdown

EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs are next in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, as the teams will head to UTRGV for matchups on Thursday.

The South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, is an annual rivalry between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV where they compete against each other across 12 sports including twice in tennis. The yearly series is led by the Islanders with a 6-2 record over the Vaqueros and they currently lead this year's competition 17.0-14.0.

A&M-Corpus Christi's biggest all-time advantage in the South Texas Showdown is in tennis.

The men are rolling in with a perfect 6-0 record on the year, getting back on the court for the first time in over a week after last defeating Prairie View in a doubleheader sweep. They have yet to drop a single point this year, winning all their matches in dominant fashion.

Every player on the men's roster has tacked on at least one singles and doubles win on the year. Four have earned a 3-0 singles record, including Tom Berry, Nicholas Niox Chateau, Maxime Salesses, and Omar Suarez. The latter two have also joined forces to post a 5-0 doubles record, spreading their success among all three courts.

Matthieu Coignet and Josef Zapletal have also grinded out a 5-0 record in doubles play as a duo, finding the majority of their triumph at the No. 2 spot.

The women are looking to storm back in the win column after UTSA was able to cut into their perfect start to the season, now holding a 9-1 record on the year. Remaining unblemished, however, has been Juliette Jalai who hoists a 9-0 singles mark having yet to drop a set.

Yana Mykytyn is untouched in singles play as well with a 6-0 record mainly from courts two and three. Josefa Fuenzalida and Leticia Tarocco have also produced six wins on the year in their individual matches.

In doubles play, Mykytyn and Kseniya Ramanouskaya have dominated at No. 1 doubles with a perfect 8-0 record. They were also leading UTSA's No. 1 doubles pair before the point was decided from courts two and three.

Under Moore, the men are 26-4 over UTRGV while the women hoist a near-perfect record at 28-1 against the Vaqueros. The matchup won't count towards their conference record until the teams play each other again on April 12 in Corpus Christi.
