CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A 45-match home winning streak was snapped Monday, as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team dropped to UTSA in a decision at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
It was a battle of the undefeated, and while the young Islanders (9-1) played tough they ultimately fell to the Roadrunners (10-0) for their first loss of the season. It unfortunately also ended a home winning streak that spanned three seasons, dropping at home for the first time since 2021.
"Our girls fought hard today and showed a lot of heart! This match was a battle, I give UTSA a lot of credit. This is one of the best teams they've ever had and they were tough today and earned it. Our young Islanders fought hard and I was very impressed with their fighting spirit today! We are getting better and better, and I am so excited to watch these young Islanders improve daily! We are also excited about what the rest of this season holds! They say you are either winning or learning and today we did some learning, but we will be better because of it. Go Islanders," said head coach
Steve Moore.
UTSA became the first team this year to strip A&M-Corpus Christi of a doubles point, as the Roadrunners took courts two and three for the 1-0 lead in the match. Freshmen
Kseniya Ramanouskaya and
Yana Mykytyn, who entered undefeated at No. 1 doubles at 8-0 this season, was leading UTSA's top duo 5-4 before being whistled off.
Singles play was a similar grind, with multiple first sets ending with the slimmest of margins. Mykytyn saw herself up a set after battling out a 7-6 (4) score before her match went unfinished at No. 4 spot. Freshman
Juliette Jalai was the one to earn a point on the scoreboard for the Islanders, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to improve her record to 9-0 in singles play this year.
The Islanders will now look to regroup for a South Texas Showdown matchup at UTRGV this Thursday in Edinburg. The match won't count towards the conference standings until the teams play each other again on April 12.
