BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team failed to pick up a win in its first Southland Conference game of the 2025-26 season on Monday evening, getting taken down by Lamar on the road by a final score of 77-49.
The Islanders (1-7, 0-1 SLC) hung in tight with the Cardinals (4-4, 2-0 SLC) throughout the first part of Monday's contest, going into the break down by just two after picking things up offensively as the first half progressed. Lamar came out hot in the third quarter, however, creating a gap that A&M-Corpus Christi could not close by the time the clock hit zero at the end of the night.
The loss came despite the best efforts of senior
Samora Watson, with the guard reaching double figures in scoring for the sixth time so far this season with 13 points on 6-12 shooting from the field. Senior
Marissa Shelton also poured in 13 points of her own, doing so while knocking down five of her 10 shots in total and three of her six from three-point range. On the boards, senior
K'Nari Holliday led the way once again with five, while senior
Bruna Anguera and redshirt sophomore
Torie Sevier followed close behind with four apiece.
After a slow start offensively for both teams that saw just one point in total through nearly three minutes of game action, the Islanders got things going with a bucket in the paint by Holliday before then starting to warm up from distance, beginning with a long-distance hit from Shelton. Graduate
Chelsea Wooten knocked down a triple of her own soon after, which was then followed by another make from Shelton that tied the score up at 12 with the first quarter winding down.
This momentum carried over into the second period, which went to A&M-Corpus Christi by a margin of 16-13 in what ended up being the team's best of the night. This stretch was powered by a great defensive effort from the Islanders, holding the Cardinals to just 4-15 shooting from the field and 1-6 from downtown across these 10 minutes. On offense, Watson led the way with five points, and Wooten pitched in with a fantastic circus shot with the shot clock expiring near the end of the frame to help the team head into halftime trailing by just a pair.
The second half was not as kind to the Islanders, however, as Lamar came out and set the tone to the tune of 12 of the first 17 points of the third quarter to put the visitors back down by nine after just three and a half minutes. This advantage would continue to grow as time went on despite six points in the half from both Watson and Sevier, eventually reaching the 28-point margin represented in the final score.
The Islanders will now try again to get back in the win column in the final contest of their ongoing five-game road swing, heading north to Nacogdoches to square off with Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the final game before their Christmas break.
