BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team opens its Southland Conference schedule with a pair of games this week, traveling to Beaumont to take on Lamar on Monday at 6:30 p.m. before then making the trek north to Nacogdoches for a game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin.
This trip will wrap up a five-game road swing for the Islanders (1-6), who have also had nonconference stops at Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts and UTEP over the past three weeks. The team opens its Southland slate looking to qualify for the conference tournament for the fifth season in a row and eighth time in the past nine possible years, a stretch that includes the program's first-ever conference championship back in 2023-24.
Starting things off for A&M-Corpus Christi is a matchup with the Cardinals (3-4, 1-0 SLC), who began their own conference slate back on December 2 with a win over UTRGV. The game on Monday will look a lot different than the most recent time the two teams squared off in the 2024-25 regular season finale on March 5, as five of the six players that reached double figures in scoring on that day have since graduated and moved on from their respective schools. For the Islanders, the lone player to suit up for both games will be senior
Samora Watson, who scored four points and recorded three steals in 20 minutes off the bench back in March. Watson enters play this week coming off her highest-scoring game with the program, pouring in 17 points in her last time out against UTEP.
Following this, the Islanders then complete the trip against the Ladyjacks (6-2), who received votes in the most recent CollegeInsider Women's Mid Major Top 25. Although A&M-Corpus Christi fell in both matchups last season, it did manage to play SFA close, falling to the reigning conference champions by just seven points at home back on December 14 of last year. The Islanders will be trying to pick up their first win in the matchup since the semifinals of the 2019 Southland Conference Championship and their first victory in Nacogdoches since the first meeting between the two schools back in 2004.
Both games will be available to watch live on ESPN+. They will also be available to listen live for free on 1440 AM K-E-Y-S with
Steven King on the call filling in for Doug Kesterson.
