Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Islanders Suffer First Loss of 2025-26 at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2025-26 season on Wednesday evening, starting off strong but ultimately falling on the road to Texas A&M by a final score of 81-43.

After falling victim to a 13-2 run right out of the gates, the Islanders (1-1) responded with a very nice run of their own, ripping off 11 of the next 15 points to end the first quarter behind by just four. This stretch was powered by senior Marissa Shelton, who entered Monday coming off a 20-point performance in the season opener just two days earlier and followed that up with seven more in the opening frame on a pair of buckets inside the arc and a make from distance all within a three-minute span. Seniors Samora Watson and K'Nari Holliday also chipped in with a pair of makes themselves near the end of the period, setting the visitors up well after the first 10 minutes.

The second period started out in a similar fashion, with the Aggies (1-0) scoring the first seven points before A&M-Corpus Christi then answered back with five of its own right after, all of which came from graduate Chelsea Wooten. The flagship quickly wrestled this momentum away, though, taking advantage of eight turnovers in the quarter to score 18 of the final 20 points before the buzzer, sending the Islanders into the locker room down by a score of 42-20.

The break did not slow the Aggies down, as the hosts continued to add on thanks in large part to offensive rebounds and points off turnovers as the game progressed to the finish line. The Islanders did find a bit more of a groove on offense in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points behind seven from Watson, but it proved to be not enough to close the gap in A&M-Corpus Christi's favor.

One of the bright spots for the Islanders on the day was their defense, as they managed to hold their SEC opponents to just 39.5 percent shooting from the field and 42.8 percent on shots inside the arc. Their main Achilles heel came in the rebounding department, however, as they lost the battle 50-33 and 29-8 on the offensive glass, allowing the Aggies to get up 76 shots in total while they took just 43.

The leading scorer for A&M-Corpus Christi on the day was Watson, who posted 12 points to reach double figures for the second game in a row while also grabbing six rebounds. Wooten followed closely behind with eight points of her own, while Shelton finished with seven and led the team with five assists.

The Islanders will now look to regroup when they return home for their next game, getting back in action next Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a matchup with Santa Clara at the Dugan Wellness Center.
