Women's Basketball Welcomes Northwestern State, UTRGV This Week

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team returns back to the American Bank Center to continue Southland Conference play this week, hosting Northwestern State on Thursday at 7 p.m. before taking on UTRGV on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Islanders (9-5, 1-2 SLC) are coming off of a road trip to Louisiana in their last taste of game action last week, first taking down New Orleans 78-66 on Thursday before falling to Southeastern two days later by a final of 75-62. The first of these games was the one of the team's best all-around performances of the season on offense, with those 78 points being their fourth-highest total of the season to date and their best against a Division I opponent so far. On the individual side, graduate Paige Allen led the way for the team on the trip, averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 45 percent from the field.

A&M-Corpus Christi now shifts its focus to this week, starting with a matchup against the Lady Demons (6-7, 3-1 SLC) that it has historically done very well in. The team has won 18 of the 23 games it has played against Northwestern State in the all-time series, including each of the last 11 contests dating back over eight years to January 7, 2017. The last time the two squared off was on February 15 of last year, where the Islanders took home a comfortable 68-52 victory behind 15 points from current graduate Mireia Aguado.

Following this is the first South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union of the season against the Vaqueros (7-8, 2-2 SLC), with the Islanders having a chance to further increase the 13-4 lead that they currently have in the year-long standings. They managed to down UTRGV in both matchups last season, earning a dominant 69-46 victory at home before most recently heading on the road and holding on for a 57-51 win on December 14, 2023.

Both games will be available to watch live on ESPN+ with Doug Kesterson on the call.
