CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ahead of a new championship season starting for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program, the team announced the signing of Josefa Fuenzalida to the 2025 spring roster Tuesday.
Fuenzalida will arrive on campus prior to the start of the spring season, joining an Islanders women's tennis team that is no stranger to a championship run just in time. The Islanders are coming off as back-to-back undefeated regular season champions as well as making conference history to reach the NCAA Tournament four years in a row.
Fuenzalida will elevate that success, coming to the Island as the National Champion of Chile in both singles and doubles. She reached a #1 national ranking in her home country and hoists an 8.5 UTR after becoming a J30 ITF singles champion and winning multiple ITF junior tournaments.
She also adds to a recruiting class that was already ranked top-25 in the Tennis Recruiting Network and Inspiration Academy Mid-Major Recruiting Class Rankings. The newcomer class ranked 21
st out of over 240 mid-majors in tennis and 328 total Division I programs.
"We are incredibly excited Josefa has chosen to join the Islanders tennis family!" said associate head coach
Olga Bazhanova. "She is the national champion of her country in singles and doubles, she's won international ITF tournaments and ranked with an 8.5 UTR. We love her attitude and her desire to be on a team with strong culture, team unity work ethic, and discipline! We know she will make an impact!
