CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Looking to build off a historical championship season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team reloaded with seven additions to the 2024-25 roster, announced by head coach
Royce Chadwick.
The Islanders will see seven new faces join them for the 2024-25 season, welcoming in
Logan Reed,
Monae' Duffy,
Kimora Fagan,
Natalie Huff,
Samora Watson,
Miriam Vilafranca, and
Naiya Carney. The newcomer roster will feature five freshman and two transfers who join an Islanders squad that is coming off its first-ever SLC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.
Reed, from Godley, Texas, is a 6'0" guard and a four-year letterwinner in high school. She earned district superlatives every year of her high school career, beginning with being named the 2020-21 Newcomer of the Year. She then went on to be named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-22, the Offensive Player of the Year in 2022-23, and the District MVP in 2023-24. It helped her be awarded All-State accolades in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons after also guiding the team to back-to-back District Championships.
"We are thrilled to welcome Logan to our family. Her versatility and athleticism set her apart from other players. Her commitment on and off the floor sets a standard of excellence that aligns perfectly with our culture here on the Island. We look forward to being a part of her continued growth as a student athlete," said Chadwick.
Duffy, out of Lafayette, Louisiana, is a 5'10" forward and transfers in after spending two seasons at Hutchinson Community College. She helped the Blue Dragons to a Conference Championship, Region Six championship, and National Championship during her time there and earned All-Conference First Team honors both years. In high school, she guided her team to four straight District Titles and three State appearances.
"We are excited to have Monae' join our program. She is a remarkable athlete who led Hutchison Junior College to a national championship and an undefeated season. She is a winner both on and off the floor as she is an excellent lead by example athlete. She will be an instant impact player for us," Chadwick said.
Fagan, an in-state product from Edinburg, Texas, comes straight out of high school as a 5'7" guard. In 2023, she was tabbed the 31-6A District MVP and was named to the All-Defensive Team while also being named to the TABC and TGCA All-State Teams. In 2024, she continued to bulk up her resume as the District MVP and Monitors Player of the Year, as well as repeating her All-Defensive and All-State honors.
"Kimora has the ability to be a tremendous college player. She is incredibly fast and athletic with deep three-point range. Kimora is a natural leader and a true up-tempo guard. She will do some great things here on the Island," said Chadwick.
Huff, from San Antonio, Texas, is a 5'7" guard and has been a part of a three-time defending District Championship high school squad as well as helping her team to a State title in the 2022-23 season. She earned All-District First-Team honors all four years as well as making it onto the All-Tournament Team following the State Championship in 2023. It helped her also be named to the TABC All-Region 6A Team that year.
"We are proud to welcome
Natalie Huff to our program. Natalie is a phenomenal player having scored over 1,000 points in her career while earning Academic All-State honors. Her leadership was instrumental in winning the 6A state championship. We are excited about the experience and winning disposition she brings to our team," said Chadwick.
Watson, out of Eunice, Louisiana, transfer in as a 5'6" guard from Central Connecticut. With the Blue Devils, she was named to the First Team All-Conference in the NEC after averaging the league's second-best points per game mark at 17.1. She was one of just two players in the nation to have three or more 35+ point games this past season, joining Iowa's Caitlin Clark. In high school, she averaged 29 points per outing.
"We are thrilled to add Samora to our Islander family. She brings tenacious scoring potential to our back court as she was the leading scorer at Central Connecticut State university. She is one of two Division 1 players along with Caitlyn Clark who had multiple 30-point scoring games. She will be an instant impact player in the Southland Conference," Chadwick said.
Vilafranca comes from Barcelona, Spain as a 5'8" guard. She joins the Islanders after playing with the Champion of Catalonia Clubs and of Spain Infantil. She was named the 2023 Defensive Player of the BWB Europe Camp and is coming off playing in the Spanish Championship. She also played school ball at Jaume Mimo and club ball with Joventut de Badalona from 2022-24.
"Miriam is a tremendous basketball player. Her game is the complete game as she can shoot the three, has a great midrange and can slash to the rim. Her defense is outstanding, and her leadership skill jumps out at you when you watch her team play. We are very excited to have her in our program," said Chadwick.
Carney, from Dallas, Texas, comes to the Island as a 5'6" guard. She was a four-year letterwinner in high school where she earned All-District honors all four years. She averaged 9.7 points, 2.3 steals, and 1.7 assists per game during her high school career. Additionally, she was honored with the school's Character Award each year and graced the academic honor roll.
"Naiya is a highly skilled basketball player who is a valuable asset to our team. With her ability to defend, pass, and shoot from long range, along with her adaptability to play any position, she has the potential to make an instant impact once she gets accustomed to college-level physicality," said Chadwick.
The Islanders will open their 2024-25 season on Nov. 4. Their conference opener will be at home on Dec. 14 against SFA.
