TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team fell out of rhythm in its final regular season tournament, dropping to North Alabama 4-1 and #4 Florida State 3-0 Saturday in the Unconquered Invitational.
The #20 Islanders (24-7) found themselves in numerous close decisions that just couldn't seem to sway their way. 10 sets on the day were decided by just two points, but it was A&M-Corpus Christi's opponents that managed to win seven of those to keep the Islanders at bay.
Senior
Tori Johnson and sophomore
Raven Jordan were the only duo to notch a win on the day, as they battled out a 17-21, 21-19, 15-9 victory over North Alabama at flight four. Every other pair won at least a set on the day, with the match against the Lions featuring four three-set duals.
Graduate
Chloe Tome and freshman
Cassie Dodd were up a set against the #4 Florida State Seminoles at court two after taking it 21-18 before the match was whistled down in the only play-to-clinch match played on the weekend. The other courts didn't go down easy against the top-five national ranked team, with fighting within four points in most of the sets.
Despite the frustrating day, the Islanders are still on track to post their best record in program history with at least three matches guaranteed left to play. They have already notched their most wins in a single-season with the 24, which featured their second-ever win over a ranked opponent with the 3-2 victory over #16 FAU yesterday.
The Islanders will close out the regular season with a doubleheader at the University of Texas next Saturday. They have already topped the Longhorns this season, winning 3-2 in their home tournament last weekend. From there, the SLC Regular Season Champions will seek a three-peat at the SLC Championships set for April 19-21 in Houston, Texas.
