Houston, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team dominated day one of the Southland Conference tournament, downing No. 9 Nicholls and No. 4 San Jose State in 3-0 decisions Friday at Third Coast Volleyball.
It secures a spot in the winner's bracket semifinals tomorrow. It is the fourth year in a row that the Islanders cruised straight to the semifinals.
The Islanders (27-8) kicked off the day with a commanding 3-0 victory against No. 8 Nicholls (10-24). It came from the dominance at courts one, two, and four where the pairs didn't let up more than 15 points in a set.
Flights two and four got the day started as
Madison Morrow and
Kristin Bobay fought out a 21-15, 21-14 win at the second court.
Elizabeth Cortez and
Kela Moreno at No. 4 then capitalized early and notched the 21-12, 21-6 win for the 2-0 lead in the match.
At the one spot,
Cassie Dodd/
Chloe Tome raced out to a 21-5, 21-10 to secure the victory over the Colonels.
In their second match of the day against No. 4 San Jose State, the Islanders ensured another win. Despite a tense beginning with the first two pairs battling through three sets each, the Islanders emerged successful.
Millie Olsson and
Stephanie Young sealed the deal with a decisive final point, complementing the second pair of wins on the day from Morrow/Bobay and Cortez/Moreno.
Tomorrow at 3 p.m., the Islanders will take on No. 2 Boise State, setting the stage for a thrilling rematch from last year's finals. Maintaining an impeccable 6-0 record against the Broncos, the Islanders aim to book their spot in the championship match for the fourth year in a row, scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
