Tennis Champs Head to Northwestern State for Regular Season Finale

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Already with the regular season crown secured, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team will now go for the goal of wrapping up another undefeated conference record when they take on Northwestern State in the regular season finale Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Islanders {19-2, 6-0 SLC) and the Lady Demons (10-7, 3-3 SLC) will finally square off at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex Saturday after the match was originally set to be played back in early March before weather caused the reschedule. It will be the final match of the regular season before the teams head to the SLC Championships next week in San Antonio.

It will come after A&M-Corpus Christi already locked up the regular season championship outright for the second year in a row. It is the women's 12th overall championship, continuing their stance as one of the most winning programs in the history of the conference for any sport.

It also marked the women's sixth regular season crown as they have now become the league's most winning team with the most regular season titles, beating out Northwestern State as the two were previously tied at five apiece.

However, the Islanders will still be fighting for the chance to go into the conference tournament with the undefeated SLC record. It would be the second year in a row for them to do so, and third ever in program history.

The senior class is also looking to close out their careers strong, with senior Emma Aucagne hoisting the 5-1 conference record at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner senior Naomi Moi McKenzie. McKenzie is an untouched 5-0 at No. 2 singles.

Senior Valeria Cherfus is also undefeated in conference, maintaining a team-best 6-0 record at line four. Since joining the Islanders last year, Cherfus has never dropped a match to a conference opponent, going 13-0 in the regular season and 15-0 including the conference tournament.

Sophomore Palina Saulevich has added solid depth to the Islanders, staying at 5-0 from No. 6 singles. Senior Kateryna Rublevska, who clinched the top-two battle against McNeese, also adds five wins from court five. Freshman Ana Veroux has played at court three in conference for four wins.

The Islanders have won 22 straight matches against Southland opponents, including the conference tournaments. Though, A&M-Corpus Christi and Northwestern State are evened at 12-12 in the head-to-head record.
