CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team will conclude the 2024 regular season on its home court Thursday, hosting Lamar at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (15-6, 2-1 SLC) will also honor senior
Avery Zavala in between doubles and singles play in a special Senior Day recognition.
Zavala is a two-time SLC Player of the Week this year, playing at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles. He joined the Islanders last season where he helped the men to their 22nd conference championship after playing a role in clinching the SLC Tournament Title. He entered the 2023 NCAA Tournament on an 11-match winning-streak in doubles and is currently on a six-match winning streak in doubles this season again at No. 1.
"Avery has been an absolute superstar for the Islanders as a No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles player who has rose up and delivered consistently in the biggest moments! He led the Islanders to the NCAA Championships where they battled the national champions, to the Southland Conference championship, and to a #71 national team ranking which is top-25 percent in all of NCAA Division I! He beat the #3 team in the nation at the Texas Regionals! But what will always stand out about Avery is his outstanding character! He truly stands for all the good values a young man could stand for: he's respectful, team-first always, hard-working, cares about others, positive, uplifting, and competes like a warrior! Avery is the kind of character person you build a great team around!" said head coach
Steve Moore.
The presentation will help celebrate the end of another Islanders tennis season, as the 11 a.m. match will be the final regular season competition for the men. They will be looking to take a win into the SLC Tournament next weekend in San Antonio.
The men have notched a pair of 5-2 wins over New Orleans and Nicholls this year, only dropping to top seeded UIW on the road. In San Antonio, sophomore
Etienne Marty notched his first conference win of the year with a battled 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-6 win at No. 2 singles. Marty and Zavala, who are undefeated at No. 1 doubles in conference play, were leading the Cardinals 5-4.
Zavala is up to 10 singles wins on the year, all from the top line. Newcomers senior
Antoine Vicaire and freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet lead the team with 14 wins each, adding depth to the Islanders lineup from courts five and six.
Returner
Lucas Schurdevin has settled into court three, where he's garnered seven of his 11 singles wins. Freshman
Iannis Fernandes has also reached 11 wins on the year, playing mainly at No. 4 singles.
The Islanders are 21-3 all-time over Lamar and is a perfect 12-0 against the Cardinals when playing at home. The men hoist a 58-3 home record against conference opponents since 2007.
