FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team didn't let a tight 3-2 loss to Tulane linger to bounce back with a 3-2 win of their own over UC Davis to conclude the Horned Frog Challenge Saturday.
The Islanders (10-3) capped the weekend with a 3-1 record at TCU's Horned Frog Challenge as the win over UC Davis finalized the two-day tournament. Despite the additional loss, the Islanders are still off to their best start in program history with 10 wins already through 13 matches.
"Playing through adverse weather conditions to finish 3-1 over the weekend brought us closer together as a team," said head coach
Gayle Stammer. "I am happy knowing that we drew strength from our wins and are continuing to learn valuable lessons from our losses."
A&M-Corpus Christi and Tulane now split the season after the Islanders topped the Green Wave 4-1 earlier this year. Today went the opposite way, however, as
Kristin Bobay/
Madison Morrow at flight one and
Tori Johnson/
Elizabeth Cortez at flight five were the only pairings to notch a win at their respective courts for the Islanders.
However, it was the other three courts in the second match of the day that stepped up to recoup the day. After UC Davis managed to take the first point of the match,
Kela Moreno and
Elizabeth Cortez evened the playing field by grinding out a three-set comeback after just being edged 27-25 in the first. They fired back with a 21-15 set two before closing it out 15-11.
Chloe Tome/
Cassie Dodd then battled out an exhausting 22-20, 21-19 victory for a straight-set dual at No. 2 as the Islanders took a 2-1 lead in the match.
At court three,
Hannah Doyle and
Stephanie Young paired and easily posted a 21-8 first set before having to dig in the second to finish the straight-set victory with a 22-20 score and clinch the match for the Islanders.
The Islanders moved to 2-0 all-time over UC Davis after the two met for the first time last season. Both were closely contested contests, with A&M-Corpus Christi emerging as victorious in each 3-2 decisions.
Next up, the Islanders will head west for matches at Stanford and San Jose State, taking time to face North Florida and Utah on the trip as well. The match against San Jose State will be A&M-Corpus Christi's official conference opener before playing the rest of its SLC slate at the Southland Midyear Tournament March 22-24.
