Aucagne Wins SLC Player of the Week Ahead of Midweek Match at SMU

March 05, 2024

DALLAS, Texas – Senior Emma Aucagne helped the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team get off to another winning start to conference play to earn herself SLC Player of the Week, announced by the league office ahead of the team taking on SMU Wednesday morning.

Aucagne went 2-0 in the conference opener to get the defending champions to an unblemished start towards reigning again as the Islanders defeated Southeastern 4-0. After pairing with senior Naomi Moi McKenzie at No. 1 doubles for a dominate 6-1 start to the match, Aucagne notched her second win of the day with a smooth 6-4, 6-1 score at No. 1 singles.

She is now 9-2 overall on the year at the top court and is off to a 1-0 start in both singles and doubles in SLC play. She is the second Islander from the women's team to earn the weekly accolade, and fifth overall between the men and women.

"In the history of this program, there are very few athletes that have ever accomplished what Emma has accomplished: winning SLC Player of the Year as well as going to the NCAA Tournament three straight years! The root of her success is that she pours her whole heart into this team as a captain, leader, number one player, and teammate! She cares about this team as much as any player I've ever coached in 30 years! We are so proud of her winning this award but we have always been so proud of her," said head coach Steve Moore.

She and the rest of the Islanders (10-1) will look to take that momentum into a challenging matchup at SMU Wednesday at 11 a.m. They will seek their second straight road victory after the win over Southeastern came in Hammond, La.

Also with nine wins on the year is fellow senior Valeria Cherfus, who hoists 9-1 record mainly at the No. 3 spot. Meanwhile, McKenzie remains untouched with a 6-0 record all at court two and freshman Ana Veroux has matched the veteran's record in her first collegiate season playing between courts three and four.

Veroux and sophomore Palina Saulevich have paired for the team's best doubles record at 5-1 including an undefeated 3-0 at No. 2 doubles.

The Islanders will be going for their second ever win over the Mustangs, and first since the 2014 season. In that victory, the program's all-time wins leader Celia Rodriguez clinched the 4-3 match with a thrilling three-setter at No. 4 where she beat out her SMU opponent 7-5 in the final set.
