SAN MARCOS, Texas – Coming off a solid weekend of home play, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team will take another midweek trip this time to Texas State for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Islanders (6-8) are coming off a 2-1 series win over Abilene Christian this past weekend after bringing home a well-earned 2-1 win at UTRGV last Wednesday. Every win was backed strongly from the A&M-Corpus Christi pitching, as they only conceded four runs between those three wins.
Juniors
Zach Garcia and
Riely Hunsaker both recorded quality starts on the mound against Abilene Christian as each earned themselves a win over the weekend. They both struck out six during their outings.
Senior
Maddox Thornton relieved Hunsaker in game two with the Wildcats and threw 3.0 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the week. His first came after he entered the game at UTRGV in the eighth and posted six-up, six-down for the save.
On the offensive end, the Islanders have racked up 135 hits on the year to rank #12 overall in the NCAA. They also rank top-20 in triples (5), sacrifice bunts (9), and stolen bases (28). A&M-Corpus Christi is #7 in double plays after turning 13 already this year.
Juniors
Isaac Webb,
Drake Kerr, and
Garrett Gruell are all batting above a .340 as each have started every game this year. Webb leads all batters with a .365 batting average in addition to 23 hits on the year, two of which are triples. He is third in the nation in hits and ninth in triples.
"Texas State has grown into one of the strongest mid-majors easily in the state of Texas and maybe even in all of NCAA baseball," said head coach
Scott Malone. "They've made great runs in the regionals the last few years and they're ultra talented which they just showed this weekend in the Minute Maid Classic by beating Texas, beating Texas, having a competitive game with LSU. I think they know they can compete with anybody they want to, so it'll be a big challenge for us to go in and they play in a hitter's park so we're going to have to pitch well. They'll be some different names tomorrow, we just went through the top of our rotation over the weekend, but it'll be an exciting challenge. They'll have a good crowd so I'm looking forward to it and hopefully we have a good Tuesday."
Texas State (7-4) is coming off a huge performance at the Minute Maid Classic over the weekend where they notched wins over Houston and #15 Texas. The Islanders will be looking for their first win over the Bobcats since 2019 after the two last met in 2023 where Texas State won 7-5.
The game will be available to watch live with a subscription to ESPN+.
