Islanders Win 20th Straight SLC Match with 6-1 Victory over UIW

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Taking on a rematch of the 2023 SLC Championships and emerging victorious once again, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team won its 20th consecutive conference match with the 6-1 win over UIW Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

The Islanders (17-2, 4-0 SLC) have extended multiple streaks, including a 20-match winning streak against Southland Conference opponents. They haven't dropped a match to a conference member, including in the SLC tournaments, since the 2021-22 season. A&M-Corpus Christi also extend their home winning streak to 43 straight matches spanning over the last four seasons and improve to 12-0 all-time over UIW.

It was the first time the two teams met since they faced off in Corpus Christi last year in the 2023 SLC Tournament finale. From there, the Islanders defended theirs and won it 4-1 to make it to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.

The seniors remembered that moment and took care of the doubles point to get the morning started. Kateryna Rublevska/Valeria Cherfus rolled out the 6-2 win at court three for the early advantage and Emma Aucagne/Naomi Moi McKenzie, who remain undefeated in SLC doubles, solidified the doubles point with a 6-4 decision at No. 1.

Rublevska then took care of business at No. 5 singles without dropping a game to win it with a pair of 6-0 sets. Sophomore Palina Saulevich matched that dominance with the exact same score at court six for the 3-0 lead in the match. Cherfus was close to that, opening with a 6-0 set at court four before closing out a 6-2 second to still earn the straight-set victory.

After battling out a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker for the first set, McKenzie closed out her singles with a 6-2 second set for the win at No. 2 singles. Aucagne closed out the day with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 1 singles to complete the 6-1 match.

Rublevska and Cherfus move to 4-0 in conference play in their singles matches while Aucagne/McKenzie remain untouched 4-0 at No. 1 doubles.

"Incredibly proud of these high character girls! They have stuck together like a family all year! They fight for each other! We are on a journey and there is a lot we must improve, but I feel these girls have the character, sense of urgency, and high motivation to make these improvements! One thing I know is this: nobody cares more, and no one will fight harder than these girls! 20 straight wins in the southland conference is extremely difficult to achieve! Onward and upward for the Islanders!" said head coach Steve Moore.

The Islanders won't be off long, and will return to their home courts next Saturday, April 6, against McNeese in a battle of the undefeated.
