Islanders Heads into Tough Atmosphere at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Going against an in-state baseball powerhouse, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team will take on the University of Texas Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Islanders (12-16) and the Longhorns (15-9) will get going at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will be available to watch live on the Longhorn Network.

"The Longhorns are super talented, they have a top-25 level team every year," said head coach Scott Malone. "It is a great opportunity for one to play on one of the biggest stages. So many Islanders fans from all over the south will be watching the game on the Longhorn Network."

The Islanders are coming off a series win over UIW to open the conference slate, completing a reverse sweep after dropping game one. Four Islanders notched over five hits through the series, including nine from senior Sebastian Trinidad. Junior Garrett Gruell had four of his five come in the form of home runs, knocking one out of the park at least once in each game of the series.

He is the first Islander to record at least two home runs in a game this year, helping him get a season-high five RBIs in the rubber match with UIW to secure the series win.

Trinidad and Gruell are two of five Islanders batting over a .300 this year, which Trinidad leading it at a .372. Junior Isaac Webb seconds the team with a .347 as he and Gruell are the only two to have started every game this year.

Overall, the Islanders recorded 36 hits over the three games to total 164 on the year which ranks them #21 in the NCAA. They are also top-10 in triples (12) and double plays (25). A&M-Corpus Christi's 25 double plays turned leads the conference.

"Some of the best nights in the history of Islanders baseball have come in Austin on the Texas campus, so let's hope we can find some magic again tomorrow," said Malone.

The Islanders have won five games against the Longhorns since the teams first met in 2001. They last beat Texas in 2019 with an 8-2 victory at home. A&M-Corpus Christi has won in Austin the four other times, including last in 2016 with a 5-0 shutout.
