NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team got past a hurdle on day two of the SLC Midyear Tournament and went unscathed, beating Boise State 3-2 and New Orleans 5-0 on Saturday.
The #20 Islanders (17-4, 5-0 SLC) battled out an absolute dogfight in the morning against the Broncos as three courts went to a deciding third set. Tied at 2-2, all eyes went to court three where
Hannah Doyle/
Stephanie Young were faced with a 14-all situation and took it head on to win the clinching two points for the 3-2 match victory.
A&M-Corpus Christi then took that momentum into a more dominant match against the Privateers for a clean 5-0 sweep. It capped another undefeated day of conference play for the nationally ranked Islanders who move to 31-0 in regular season matchups against Southland opponents under head coach
Gayle Stammer.
The Islanders have not dropped any match to a conference member since 2021.
The day began with a 13-extra point first set at court one as
Kristin Bobay and
Madison Morrow took down the reigning SLC Pair of the Week 34-32, 21-16 in a straight-set victory against Boise State. The Broncos were able to even it with a win at court four before
Tori Johnson/
Jade Bennett got the Islanders back up to a 2-1 lead with a three-set victory at No. 5.
Another match evener cam at flight two as the inevitable decision would be made at flight three. After dropping the first set in a narrow 21-19 score, Doyle/Young answered back with a 21-13 set two and took that fight into the third where they edged the Broncos in extras 16-14 to clinch the match at the last possible point.
Courts one, two, and three remained the same for the Islanders into the second match of the day as each pair notched another victory at their respective flights. Johnson teamed up with sophomore
Raven Jordan at court four against the Privateers to get a 21-13, 21-16 win before juniors
Elizabeth Cortez and
Kela Moreno earned a 21-6, 20-22, 15-12 victory at court five.
It moves A&M-Corpus Christi two steps closer to bringing another trophy back to its city. The reigning champions will seek a repeat tomorrow when they play their final two conference matches of the regular season. A&M-Corpus Christi will take on HCU first at 10:30 a.m. before wrapping up against Southeastern at 1:15 p.m.
