SLC Play Begins in Full Swing for Champion Tennis Programs

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With a familiarity of conference success under their belts, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men and women's tennis teams enter league play poised to extend that championship culture when they welcome New Orleans Saturday and Nicholls Monday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

Islanders Tennis is one of the most decorated programs among all Southland Conference sports, combining for 33 league titles including 22 from the men's side.

That dominance has been prevalent at home, as the men hoist a 56-3 home record against conference opponents since 2007. The women stand strong at 38-2 in SLC play at home since 2015 but are undefeated on their home court with a 40-0 overall record spanning over the last four seasons.

The last time each team faced a Southland opponent was in the 2023 SLC Finals as the Islanders were hosts to the tournament. In each instance, the Islanders came away with the victories to punch their tickets to the NCAA Tournament.

The men topped New Orleans 4-3 in a final court tiebreaker in front of an electric home crowd to win their 22nd championship and 10th tournament title. The women then solidified their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 4-1 victory over UIW, their 11th overall title.

Head coach Steve Moore continues at the helm where he has led the Islanders to its unprecedented success. Since 2007, the men are 98-24 all-time against Southland Conference members while the women post a 130-37 record versus SLC teams since 2009 all under Moore.

The women have already initiated the start of conference play this season with a 4-0 victory at Southeastern at the end of February. It led senior Emma Aucagne to an SLC Player of the Week nod after she started the SLC slate with a win at both No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles. She is one of two Islanders from the women's team to be honored with the conference accolade along with senior Naomi Moi McKenzie.

Aucagne has 10 wins at court one this year in singles to aid an 11-3 overall record on the year. She comes in right behind senior Valeria Cherfus in win-total who hoists a team-best 12-1 record. The veterans are joined by fellow upperclassman Kateryna Rublevska in double figure wins with 10.

The men have had three SLC Player of the Week selections in seniors Avery Zavala and Antoine Vicaire along with freshman Nicolas Trebuchet. Zavala is the captain returner from that championship squad last year, who played at court one last year for every SLC match.

Vicaire has settled in nicely for a team-best 13-2 record in singles and 10-5 doubles record paired with freshman Matthieu Coignet. Trebuchet comes in with 12 wins on the year in duals while sophomore returner Lucas Schurdevin has emerged this year for a 9-4 individual record.

The women are 10-2 against New Orleans and a perfect 15-0 against Nicholls under Moore. The men are 12-3 against the Privateers and 21-0 over the Colonels.
