Tennis Prepped for Final Nonconference Matches

WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs are inching towards conference but will need to close out the nonconference schedule Tuesday in doubleheader matches against Texas Wesleyan in Waco.

Both teams will play at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to conclude the nonconference on a neutral court as the two will match up with the Rams in Waco, Texas. It will be a final tune-up for the Islanders before they begin their journey of adding to their dynasty when the bulk of SLC play starts this weekend.

"This is another great opportunity for us to improve our process of playing every present point with intensity and strive to have the best team unity in the country! We've got so much we want to improve and need to improve, and tomorrow is a great chance to compete again and move closer to where we want to be," said head coach Steve Moore.

The women (13-2) have already garnered a pair of neutral court wins this year, topping Abilene Christian 4-2 and Alcorn State 6-0 last week. In the recent win over the Braves, A&M-Corpus Christi looked to their younger group to step up and that they did as freshmen Ana Veroux and Zoe Moley and sophomore Palina Saulevich all notched wins in their singles duals.

Senior leaders Valeria Cherfus and Emma Aucagne still spearhead the women, though, as they lead the team with double figures wins on the year. Cherfus hoists the best record at 12-1 mainly from court three while Aucagne has registered 10 victories on the year nearly all from No. 1 singles.

Senior Naomi Moi McKenzie remains undefeated on the year in singles at 7-0, all coming from the No. 2 spot. Veroux and senior Kateryna Rublevska have each notched nine singles wins.

They will be looking to extend their home winning streak to 41 straight matches spanning over the last four seasons.

The men (11-5) also have a pair with double figure singles win on the year, with senior newcomer Antoine Vicaire leading the Islanders with an 11-2 mark as the versatile player has garnered it between four courts. Freshman Nicolas Trebuchet has also settled in for 10 singles win on the year.

They are coming off two neutral court wins as well where Vicaire, senior Avery Zavala, and sophomore Etienne Marty contributed greatly in the most recent 4-1 win over the Braves as the three registered the singles points. The doubles point came from Zavala and Marty winning at court one while Vicaire joined freshman Matthieu Coignet for a win at court two.

Vicaire and Coignet hoist a team-best 9-5 doubles record as a pair. They are 5-1 as a duo at court three.

It will be the first-ever meetings with the Rams for both the men and the women. Both will look to end the nonconference on a high note before welcoming a challenge in New Orleans this weekend for the beginning of conference play the rest of the way.
