Men’s Basketball to Play in CIT Tuesday 8 p.m. CT against Abilene Christian

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Extending its season under first-year head coach Jim Shaw, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team will compete in The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, presented by BSN SPORTS, in the Lou Henson Classic pod hosted by Tarleton State.

The Islanders (21-11) will take on Abilene Christian in the first round on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT. The winner will battle either Tarleton State or Texas Southern Wednesday at 6 p.m. to be awarded the Lou Henson Classic Championship and earn a spot in the CIT Semifinals.

For the third straight season, the Islanders will participate in a postseason tournament after reaching the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons. It will be A&M-Corpus Christi's fifth appearance in the CIT and first since the 2016-17 season when the program was the runners-up of the tournament after just falling 62-61 to Saint Peter's in the final.

It will be the program's eighth ever postseason appearance.

The Islanders earned an invitation after finishing second in the regular season under Shaw, who guided the program to its most regular season wins under a first-year head coach. His 21 wins was the second-most among rookie coaches in the NCAA Division I landscape this year.

The CIT Tournament features four pods of four for 16 total teams. Each pod is named after a legendary coach and is a trophy round with the Islanders partaking in the Lou Henson Classic. The legendary coach spent 21 seasons at the University of Illinois and is the program win leader with 421. In an 11-year span Henson guided the Fighting Illini to nine NCAA Tournaments including a seven-year spurt of consecutive appearances with at least a fifth seed. The College Basketball Hall of Fame Honoree passed away in 2020.

The winner of the Lou Henson Classic will advance to be one of the final four standing teams in the CIT. The semifinals and championship will be played the following week at campus sites to be determined.

All CIT games will be broadcast on ESPN+. The game(s) can also be heard live for free on 1440 AM K-E-Y-S with Steven King on the call.
