Trinidad Wins SLC Hitter of the Week as Baseball Remains Home to Host UTRGV, UH-Victoria

March 11, 2024

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off a vital home series win over the weekend, senior Sebastian Trinidad of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team came away with SLC Hitter of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.

Trinidad batted big on the 3-1 week for the Islanders who opened with a road win at Texas 6-5 before taking a 2-1 series from UTSA at home over the weekend. Through the four games, he turned in a .563 average at the plate in addition to slugging a .688 and recording a .611 on-base percentage.

He went 9-of-16 at the plate and accounted for seven of the team's 13 RBIs on the week. He reached base in 11 of his 16 at-bats and scored three times through the effort as well.

Trinidad is A&M-Corpus Christi's second recipient of a Southland Conference weekly accolade this year, after junior Riely Hunsaker took the season's opening Pitcher of the Week award.

"I am really excited for Sebastian to be named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week," said head coach Scott Malone. "I feel he is super deserving. We've had hitters in the past earn the award from multiple home runs or you know, a couple of triples, but Sebastian just hit all week and he had some two-out RBIs that really helped us win some big games. The amount of clutch hits he had this week was astounding and it is really well deserved, I am just very proud of all the work he has put in."

The Islanders (9-9) will now get to stay home to potentially build off that momentum when it welcomes UTRGV and University of Houston-Victoria Tuesday and Wednesday night at Chapman Field. Both games will feature a 6 p.m. first-pitch and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

In their last meeting with the Vaqueros, A&M-Corpus Christi clinched this year's South Texas Showdown competition, presented by Rally Credit Union with a 2-1 decision in Edinburg. This meeting will also count towards the annual rivalry between the institutions as the Islanders will look to build upon their advantage in the competition.

Since then, the Islanders have posted a 6-2 record with series wins over Abilene Christian and UTSA. It has helped them get back to a .500 pct on the year.

In those last eight games, A&M-Corpus Christi has out-hit their opponents 68-54 in less at-bats. As a team, they have turned in a .251 batting average while the Islanders' pitching has kept the opposition to just a .195 clip.

The pitching crew has thrown a combined 2.52 ERA in that eight-game stretch including junior Zach Garica who made two starts through it for quality starts in each with a 0.00 ERA. He was one of six different pitchers to earn a win on the mound during the time.

"Tuesday's game will be exciting for the fans, it is always a close and competitive game anytime we play UTRGV. Evans Hendricks will get the start for us and hopefully he can continue to have the success that he's had of late. Wednesday will be fun as well. We had played UH-Victoria for several years in a row now and have gotten away from it the last two years. These guys are always scrappy and always play us tough, so it'll be a fun challenge for us to just keep doing what we're doing and play baseball," said Malone.

The Islanders lead UTRGV 37-25 in the all-time series and is 17-10 against the Vaqueros when playing at home. A&M-Corpus Christi is 14-2 against UH-Victoria but is a perfect 8-0 at home against the Jaguars.
