BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team will gear up for a challenging road trip, heading over state lines to Baton Rouge for the Tiger Beach Challenge hosted by No. 7 LSU.
Â
The Islanders will initiate a five-match weekend on Saturday, taking on first-year program Nebraska at 8 a.m. This will be followed with a challenging face-off against the nationally ranked Tigers at 11 a.m. Bringing Saturday's action to a close, they will also aim to uphold their winning record over UCA, standing at 4-3 against the bears, with the match scheduled for 5 p.m.
Sunday's lineup, commencing at 9 a.m., presents an opportunity for the Islanders to extend their winning streak against Southern Miss, a team they currently hold a 4-0 record against. The day concludes with a challenging match against Tulane at 1 p.m., where the Islanders trail with a record of 1-4, with the last encounter dating back to 2022. Tulane received 12 votes in the recent AVCA Coaches Poll.
Coming off a strong showing last weekend at the Cowgirls Beach Bash where they secured straight-set victories over Nicholls, McNeese, and Tarleton State, the Islanders (3-1) are eager to build on their momentum of being off to one of the program's best starts in recent years. They, too, have been receiving votes in the AVCA Poll, checking in with eight this week.Â
Â
Junior Hannah Doyle and freshman Cassie Dodd will look as potentially extending their undefeated streak after an impressive 4-0 performance last weekend in Lake Charles at flight three. It earned them the Southland Conference's opening Pair of the Week award of 2024 after the weekend was highlighted by their three-set win over No. 20 Cal Poly.Â
Â
Dodd has now earned two recognitions from the conference after being tabbed to the SLC "Players to Watch" list in the preseason. She was joined by graduates Chloe Tome and Stephanie Young as well as newcomer sophomore Madison Morrow. Combined, the four went 13-3 in duals over opening weekend.Â
The Islanders were also tabbed as the preseason favorites, picked to repeat as SLC Champions after winning the inaugural regular season title last season. The wins against Nicholls and McNeese over opening weekend helped A&M-Corpus Christi remain undefeated in the regular season against conference opponents under Stammer.
Overall, the Islanders were 16-4 over opening weekend.
It will be A&M-Corpus Christi's first-ever meeting with Nebraska. The Islanders lead the all-time series 4-3 over Central Arkansas and 4-0 over Southern Miss, but trail Tulane 1-4 and LSU 0-7.
