CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Not having been gone long, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team will be back at home to host Abilene Christian in a three-game series this weekend between Chapman Field and Whataburger Field.
Friday's 6:30 p.m. game will open the series at Chapman Field while Saturday's 6:30 p.m. start time will be moved to Whataburger Field as part of the Homecoming festivities downtown. Sunday's game at 1 p.m. will be back at Chapman Field to round out the weekend.
The Islanders (4-7) will take a tough ACU (7-3) team who is coming off a 3-1 series win over Penn and most recently a 6-4 victory at Baylor. Though, A&M-Corpus Christi is looking to bring momentum into the weekend after notching a victory down at UTRGV Wednesday night.
It helped the Islanders bring home the South Texas Showdown trophy after securing the institution's sixth championship in the rivalry. It was backed heavily by the Islanders' pitching as
Evans Hendricks,
Joshua Flaugher, and
Maddox Thornton kept the Vaqueros to just the one run, UTRGV's lowest scoring game of the season.
However, this weekend's rotation will see junior
Matthew Watson,
Riely Hunsaker, and Zach Garica make starts on the mound. Each of them have pitched over 11.1 innings this year between 2-3 appearances combining for 36 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Islanders will look to junior
Isaac Webb who has found a rhythm in his first year on the Island. He leads the team batting a .404 with 21 hits, which ranks #2 among all Division I student-athletes, just two behind the nation's leader. He has aided greatly in A&M-Corpus Christi also ranking #2 in the NCAA in team hits with 113.
He is also one triple behind a tie for first in the NCAA, already having knocked two this year. Webb has also recorded a hit in every game this season, currently on an 11-game hitting streak.
While Webb is the only Islander hitting over .400, he is one of three averaging over .300 as juniors
Garrett Gruell and
Drake Kerr are batting right around a .340. They are the only three to have started and played in every game this year.
As a team, the Islanders lead the Southland Conference in double plays (10), hits, and sacrifice bunts (8).
The Islanders lead ACU 15-6 in the all-time record and are 8-1 when playing the Wildcats at home. They have won five of the last six meetings played in Corpus Christi.
Both games at Chapman Field will be available to watch live on ESPN+.
