LAKE CHARLES, La. – Posting a perfect opening day, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team swept both Nicholls and McNeese 5-0 Friday on day one of the Cowgirls Beach Bash.
It is the second time in program history that the Islanders (2-0) opened with season the wins in their first two matches and first since A&M-Corpus Christi started the 2022 season 4-0. The matches don't count as conference contests, but they help the Islanders remain undefeated in regular season matches against Southland opponents under head coach
Gayle Stammer with a 26-0 record.
The Islanders haven't lost any match to a Southland team since 2021.
The season officially got underway against Nicholls (0-1) with sophomores
Kristin Bobay and
Madison Morrow earning the first point of the year with a 21-8, 21-6 dominant performance at court two. The dup of
Kela Moreno/
Raven Jordan at No. 4 made it a 2-0 lead after defeating the Colonels in two 21-13 sets. Graduates
Chloe Tome and
Stephanie Young then clinched the match at flight one with a 21-10, 21-14 score.
The Islanders switched things up in the second match of the day, but still won the match at courts two, one, and four. The ones and twos switched positions against the Cowgirls, as Tome/Young won at the No. 2 21-11, 21-13 to open the match. Bobay/Morrow moved up to court one where they defeated the Cowgirls 21-18, 21-9 to clinch the match after
Kela Moreno and
Raven Jordan paired at the four to earn a 21-13, 21-7 dual victory.
Both matches played out the courts and the pairing of
Hannah Doyle and
Cassie Dodd got wins at No. 3 in both, topping Nicholls 21-12, 21-8 before completing a 2-0 day with a 21-13, 21-10 win over the Cowgirls.
In the first match,
Tori Johnson and
Jade Bennett won 21-8 21-7 at court five while
Elizabeth Cortez and
Autumn Stroop got it done at No. 5 in the second match 21-11, 21-10.
The Islanders will close out opening weekend tomorrow against No. 20 Cal Poly and Tarleton State at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
