CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball program will play among the best when it hosts the 14
th edition of the Kleberg Bank College Classic this weekend at Whataburger Field.
The Islanders will welcome in a triage of Power Five opponents, including Maryland (Big 10), Washington (Pac-12), and Pittsburgh (ACC). They will get their home tournament underway Friday night against the Terrapins at 6 p.m. A&M-Corpus Christi will then play Washington Saturday at 6 p.m. and Pittsburgh Sunday at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
The Islanders will then play an extra game with the Panthers on Monday for a 10:30 morning matchup back at Chapman Field outside of the tournament.
The Islanders are coming off an 8-4 win over Texas Southern in their official home opener Tuesday night. It included another outstanding start on the mound from A&M-Corpus Christi as junior
Evans Hendricks threw five scoreless innings that featured a career-high 10 strikeouts. It came after junior Riely Hunsacker won SLC Pitcher of the Week following a complete-game victory over Central Michigan last weekend.
Offensively, A&M-Corpus Christi has also found a rhythm early in the season that has put them on notice in the NCAA. They currently rank #1 overall among Division I programs in total hits, knocking 64 so far on the year. They also rank #7 in triples (3), #11 in doubles (13), and #23 in runs scored (46).
Junior
Isaac Webb has credited a lot towards those numbers as the newcomer has batted a team-best .379 with two doubles and two triples so far. He leads the lead with 11 total hits and six runs batted in.
He has started every game alongside junior
Drake Kerr, who has garnered nine hits and tied Webb for the team-lead of six RBIs. They are two of five Islanders batting over a .300 to start the 2024 season.
It will be the first-ever meetings with each team for the Islanders. All games played at Whataburger Field will be available to watch on FloBaseball, while Monday's game against Pittsburgh will be streamed live on ESPN+.
