HOUSTON, Texas – Coming down the final stretch of 2024, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will head to play HCU Thursday and Lamar Saturday for its last two road matches of the regular season.
The Islanders (17-7, 10-3) have already clinched a berth into the SLC Championships, but will now fight for seeding as this weekend should shake things up. A&M-Corpus Christi currently sits in third place in the standings, but will take on current top-ranked Lamar Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Islanders are riding a three-game winning streak into their final road trip of the regular season. Most recently, the Islanders are coming off an 86-69 toppling over A&M-Commerce that featured some of the program's best performances in recent years. Senior
Mireia Aguado finish with 12 assists, becoming the first Islander to record 10+ assists in a game since Alissa Campanero registered 12 against HCU (Houston Baptist at the time) on March 1, 2014. Senior
Paige Allen pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with her 10 points, one board shy of matching the program record for rebounds in a game.
Another career performance came from junior
Maya Ellis, who went deep six times for a whopping 25 points. The six made three-pointers is the most in a game since junior
Annukka Willstedt netted seven in a game in the 2021-22 season. Ellis is the third Islander to score at least 20 points in a game this year after Westbrook and Aguado, all of which have come in conference play.
Westbrook and Aguado lead the team in scoring, both averaging over 10 points per outing with Westbrook on top at 11.5 ppg. Aguado has significantly improved from her last year's scoring average of 4.1 ppg to now scoring 10.3 points per outing this season.
Junior
Nabaweeyah McGill continues to lead the league in blocks, averaging 1.5 per game. Westbrook seconds the conference in rebounding (7.7 rpg), third in def. rebounding (5.5 drpg), third in off. rebounding (2.3 orpg), fifth in steals (1.8 spg), and fifth in FG% (.488).
Westbrook is one of three Islanders in the top-five for steals, as Aguado ranks third (2.0 spg) and Allen ranks fourth (1.9 spg). Aguado also ranks fourth in FG% at a .489 clip while Allen ranks fourth in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and off. rebounding (2.3 orpg). Allen has grabbed at least six rebounds in every SLC game so far.
The Islanders lead the Southland Conference in scoring margin (+9.7), 3FG% defense (.254), rebounding (40.8 rpg), assists (14.71 apg), and steals (11.29 spg). The Islanders rank #9 overall in the NCAA in 3FG% defense (.254).
Both game will be available to watch live with a subscription to ESPN+. The games can also be heard live for free on 1440 AM K-E-Y-S with Doug Kesterson on the call.
