CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Going deep into the night, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team rallied tough for a 4-2 win over New Mexico State Friday in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
After dropping a narrow doubles point, the Islanders (7-2) jumped early in singles to get their footing right back into the match. After gutsy wins from senior
Avery Zavala, sophomore
Lucas Schurdevin, and freshman
Iannis Fernandes, freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet closed out a thrilling clinching point on the ace at court six.
Zavala posted a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles to even the match at 1-1. Although the Aggies would regain a 2-1 lead in the match, Fernandes quickly remedied that at court three. After barely dropping the second set 5-7, he took care of his unfinished business in the third 6-2 as the Islanders never looked back in the match.
Schurdevin got on top early at No. 4 for a 6-1 opener before closing out the win with a 6-3 set two. It came then came down to courts five and six as it was a race to see which Islander could finish first as both led in the second after taking their first sets.
In the end, it was Trebuchet who emerged victorious as his ace serve capped a 6-2, 6-3 effort at No. 6 to clinch the match.
"That was one heck of a tennis match! Both teams battled until nearly midnight. I have so much respect for New Mexico State, they are always tough and play with class! I am really proud of our guys and how they dug deep and rose up! We played poorly in doubles but showed great character and heart to dig out this gutsy win! Just really proud of our guys," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The Islanders now take a 6-5 edge in the all-time series with New Mexico State.
Next up, A&M-Corpus Christi will seek revenge on UTRGV when it hosts the Vaqueros in the second meeting of the South Texas Showdown next Thursday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
