Islanders Pounce on UTEP Early for 6-1 Victory

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team got out quick in singles to clinch the match over UTEP and finished out with the 6-1 decision Thursday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

It is the first of two final home matches before conference play starts for the Islanders women's tennis team, as the 6-1 victory moves them to 8-1 on the year. They have now extended their home winning streak to 39 consecutive matches spanning over four seasons.

Sophomore Palina Saulevich/freshman Ana Veroux paired at court two and opened doubles with a 6-3 win. The senior duo of Emma Aucagne and Naomi Moi McKenzie then clinched the 1-0 lead in the match with a 6-4 win at the ones.

Seniors Kateryna Rublevska/Valeria Cherfus were evened at 5-5 at the twos before getting waved off, but both got their fix at the singles. It proved to be motivation as Cherfus clinched the match at No. 4 with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 decision.

The deciding point came after senior Victoire Delattre jumped on UTEP quick for a 6-0, 6-2 win at court six. McKenzie then set up Cherfus for the clinch after taking a dominate 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot.

Veroux and Rublevska finished nearly simultaneously, earning the final two points for the Islanders. Veroux took an easy lead with a 6-0 set one win before settling in and cranking out a contested 7-5 set two in the three spot. Rublevska stayed consistent and posted 6-4, 6-4 scores at court five.

"I am super proud of our girls! They played a tough UTEP team that is always well-coached and high-level. It was a mush closer battle than the score! I am especially proud of Victoire setting the tone for us, it is great to have her back! I thought our girls brought great energy and spirit to this match and I think they were fully committed to playing their process! We have to stick together, keep chopping wood, and keep getting better every day," said head coach Steve Moore.

The Islanders are now 5-1 all-time against UTEP and have won the last four straight meetings. They will remain home and host UTRGV next Thursday for the second part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
