CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Putting on the longest running tournament in the country, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis tournament will host the 60
th annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions this weekend at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
The Islanders will play Friday night at 5 p.m. against New Mexico State. The six-team field also includes Louisiana, Abilene Christian, UT-Arlington, and DePaul.
"The H-E-B Tournament of Champions is truly one of the Grande events in the history of the Corpus Christi community! H-E-B founder, Howard Butt, founded this tournament himself in 1964. I can't put into words how special the H-E-B has been for the city of Corpus Christi for the pas 60 years! Our gratitude to H-E-B, for 60 years is title sponsor is profound! The Islanders are undefeated at home this year with doubleheader wins over Prairie View A&M and Howard Payne. This year, the Islanders are 30-6 overall in singles but 21-0 at home.
Newcomer senior
Antoine Vicaire is a perfect 6-0 in his dual matches, playing mainly at the No. 2 spot. He and freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet account for 12 of A&M-Corpus Christi's 30 singles wins.
Freshman
Matthieu Coignet has found success between courts four and five, hoisting an undefeated 5-0 record in his duals while freshman Nicolas Niox Chateau is also flawless with a 4-0 record between the five and six.
Chateau has paired with senior
Avery Zavala three times at doubles, winning every time at the No. 1 spot.
The 6-2 Islanders will be pitted against a 4-3 New Mexico State squad. The Aggies are coming off a doubleheader sweep over Western New Mexico. The Islanders are evened at 5-5 in the all-time series with New Mexico State.
