CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team will be back on home ground to compete against UTEP in a solitary match on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
After suffering their first defeat of the season against UTSA last week, A&M-Corpus Christi is poised for redemption as they gear up to face off against UTEP on their home turf. With conference play looming on the horizon, the Islanders are determined to bounce back and reclaim their winning momentum.
"UTEP is a very respected longtime rival! We have a lot of respect for Coach Ivan Fernandez, and Texas, El paso! We've had some great battles over the years! These long time Texas rivalries are special and always an intense competitive environment! Our Girls are working on playing each present point separately with their process! They have great heart and team unity, and we are just excited for another opportunity to play every point with intensity and battle together," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Despite that first loss, the Islanders jumped out to a 7-0 start to this season including home victories over Prairie View A&M, Howard Payne, and Texas A&M-Kingsville. It has helped A&M-Corpus Christi extend its home winning streak to 38 matches spanning the last three seasons.
Senior Emma Aucage leads with the highest overall wins at seven coming mainly from No. 1, closely followed by senior Valeria Cerfus with six victories. Senior Naomi Moi Mckenzie maintains an undefeated streak with four wins on court two, while freshman
Ana Veroux boasts a flawless 5-0 record split between courts three and four.
As a team, the Islanders are 32-4 in singles this year.
The Islanders are 4-1 all-time over UTEP and will be going for their fourth straight win over the Miners. The streak includes a 6-1 victory last season in El Paso where Aucagne, Cherfus, senior Vicotoire Delattre, and senior
