Men’s Tennis to Compete in Louisiana Winter Classic

LAFAYETTE, La. – Heading to Louisiana, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team will play in a weekend tournament hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Friday and Saturday.

Friday will begin play at 8:30 a.m. while Saturday will get underway beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The Islanders (6-1) will be one of eight teams competing on the weekend, along with ULL, North Alabama, UT-Arlington, New Orleans, Tyler Junior College, UTRGV, and Southern Miss. A&M-Corpus Christi will open against Southern Miss on Friday following the conclusion of the first match that day.

The men are coming off a pair of wins over Howard Payne in a doubleheader at home with 6-0 and 5-0 decisions. It has helped them become 30-3 in duals on the year.

Newcomers Antoine Vicaire and Nicolas Trebuchet are both 6-0 on the year in their singles. Vicaire has played mainly at the No. 2 while Trebuchet has split time between courts three and four.

The Islanders are undefeated at the No. 1, with senior Avery Zavala taking credit for three of the five wins there. It included a 6-3, 6-3 win over the UTRGV ones player. Sophomore Lucas Schurdevin won both his matches at court one against HPU.

"This tournament is a great long-term rivalry for us, and Louisiana-Lafeyette is a very respected rival! It's a very intense rivalry, but with lots of camaraderie and character and respect, the way it should be! It's been that way for 20 years and I wouldn't be surprised if the series is almost even. We love the Bayou, seeing a new part of the country, and it's a chance to unify on the road, bond together, and play every present point with intensity. The adversity is good for us," said head coach Steve Moore.

All-time, the Islanders lead UT-Arlington 12-6, New Orleans 11-3, and UTRGV 25-4. The Islanders are tied with ULL 11-11 in the all-time series. A&M-Corpus Christi could meet Tyler Junior College and North Alabama for the first times.
