CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Winning by more points than they conceded, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team ended nonconference play on a high note by posting the lopsided 103-44 victory over Schreiner Sunday in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (8-6) more than doubled-up the Mountaineers (7-2) with the +59 margin of victory, their highest of the season. It came from a spread offensive attack where A&M-Corpus Christi assisted on 21 of their 41 made field goals while also having six different players end in double figures for the second home game in a row. It is the fifth time this year the Islanders recorded 20+ assists.
Senior
Jordan Roberts led all scorers with 19 points after he fired off a 3-for-4 long-range attack with seven total made baskets. Senior
Dian Wright-Forde went on to end behind him at 14 points while juniors
Sheldon Williams and
Kam Parker also contributed off the bench with 13 points apiece. Senior
Garry Clark matched them at 13 while freshman
Damarion Dennis posted 12.
Clark is now on a 20-game streak of scoring in double figures, dating back to last season. It is the second longest active streak of double-figure games behind Treysen Eaglestaff of North Dakota (21).
Before their last home game, the Islanders hadn't had six different players score 10+ points in the same game since the 2018 season.
It is also the second home game in a row that the Islanders surpassed the century mark, having done so three total times this year. It was aided by a 55.4 percent shooting day from the field and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc.
They are one of just 13 programs in the nation to now have at least eight games shooting above 50.0 percent from the field this year.
Defensively, the Islanders forced Schreiner to turn the ball over a season-high 26 times and got out in transition to score 43 points off those turnovers. It is the most turnovers by an A&M-Corpus Christi opponent since last season when Southwestern Adventist turned it over 26 times also.
They entered the game ranked second in the league in turnover margin and will improve after posting the +16 turnover margin today. The Islanders will also extend their conference-leading marks of scoring margin (+11.3) and team field goal percentage (.504) after the +59 difference and 55.4 shooting.
It was the final home game to be played in the Dugan Wellness Center this year, the program improving to 245-111 all-time at home. The Islanders improve to 5-0 all-time over Schreiner, having held the Mountaineers to under 70 points in every meeting and winning by at least 20 points each time.
The Islanders will now solely eye conference play, getting back into the slate with a road trip the Southeastern and New Orleans this next Saturday and Monday.
