CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A pair of 40+ point halves fueled a dominate home opener for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team who posted the final 87-36 score over Dallas Christian Friday night in the Dugan Wellness Center.
All 11 available players saw at least 10 minutes of play on the court tonight as the Islanders' (1-1) spread offense attacked on all cylinders to cruise to the 50+ margin of victory over the Crusaders (0-5).
A&M-Corpus Christi shot 54.0 percent from the field tonight while the defense held Dallas Christian to a mere 23.2 percent. The Islanders are now 25-0 when they shoot over 50% from the field since head coach
Jim Shaw has been on staff.
They dominated the paint where they outscored Dallas Christian 52-12. The Islanders also held a huge advantage in points off turnovers (25-2) as they have gone two-for-two this season in having a positive turnover margin with tonight's +8.0.
Five Islanders came away in double figures, including four players that contributed to A&M-Corpus Christi's 57 bench points. It is the first time since January 6, 2023 that the Islanders had five players score 10+ points in a game.
Junior
Sheldon Williams led all scorers with 16 points after going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He's the first Islanders to go perfect from the field since
Garry Clark went 5-for-5 against Southwestern Adventist last season on November 7, almost exactly a year ago.
Clark scored 10 points tonight with five field goals, while junior
Aaron Potter and freshman
Damarion Dennis also bucketed five shots to help 13 and 11 points, respectively. Redshirt junior
Shilo Jackson also scored in double figures with 10 points.
It is the second game in a row that a freshman scored in double figures for the Islanders after freshman
Isaac Williams scored 12 at Purdue earlier this week.
It was just the second time the two teams have played each other, with the Islanders moving to 2-0 all-time over the Crusaders. A&M-Corpus Christi moves to 23-3 all-time in home openers and 238-110 all-time at home.
The Islanders will now head on another road trip, this time traveling to New Mexico for a pair of games against New Mexico and New Mexico State Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
