COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Continuing to show improvement throughout the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams will have their final regular season test at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invite Friday.
The men's 8k race will open the day at 8:30 a.m. with the women's 6k slated to begin at 9:15 a.m. The teams will run on the Watts Cross Country Course on the campus of Texas A&M.
The Islanders will be competing in a 40-team field. Notably, A&M-Corpus Christi will have the chance to go against seven Southland Conference members ahead of the league championship on Nov. 1.
The Islanders have had hearty success with their younger runners, both the men and women having underclassmen consistently leading the packs.
The women have freshman
Alicia Finnis who has been the top finisher in two of the three races this year, with fellow freshman
Elizabeth Khatevi being the one to finish just ahead of her in the third meet. That finish led Khatevi to actually win the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invite after running a 16:48.1 time in the women's 5k, finishing 10 seconds faster than the rest of the pack to secure the first-place victory out of 182.
It was first appearance this year, making her the second freshman in the last two seasons to win their collegiate debut race after now-sophomore
Mathayo Kiptoo Bundotich won his opening race in 2023.
The men have had freshman
Dominic Kiptum lead the team in each of the races he's competed in, finishing second overall at both the Rice and Notre Dame Invites as he is scraping the door at an individual victory.
The Islanders have finished near the top in every race, with the women finishing 2
nd and the men 3
rd at Rice while both ended in sixth at Notre Dame. The men also began the season with a perfect score in the Opener at the Seashore.
