CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis program will return home to the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center to welcome Howard Payne in a pair of doubleheaders on Tuesday.
Both teams will play back-to-back, starting at 9 a.m. with the second matches scheduled tentatively for 12 p.m.
The women are 4-0 to start the season and are recently coming off a 6-1 victory at UTRGV for the South Texas Showdown. It came not long after they topped Prairie View A&M in a quick 4-0 decision to open the home slate for 2024.
Matching that team record is senior
Emma Aucagne who has gone 4-0 in her duals mainly at the No. 1 spot. Her veteran experience has rubbed off on freshman
Ana Veroux who, in her collegiate debut season, is also 4-0 in singles. She has split her time between courts three and four.
The men will be looking to turn a new page after suffering their first loss of the year in a highly battled 4-3 contest at UTRGV, their first loss to the Vaqueros in 14 years, home or away.Though, the Islanders have already garnered four wins this year to support their bounce back.
In their home openers, the men fought the weather and still came away with 4-0 and 6-0 wins over Prairie View A&M. Freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet has stepped up and carries a 4-0 record in singles, mainly at the No. 4. Newcomer senior
Antoine Vicaire has also grinded out a 4-0 dual record, spreading his attack between courts two, three, and five. Senior
Avery Zavala, the opening SLC Player of the Week recipient, is an undefeated 3-0 at No. 1.
"Our teams realized in the UTRGV matches that we must have a greater sense of urgency to improve in several key areas! I think tomorrow against Howard Payne you will see a very focused Islanders team in the way that they compete and support each other. I'm looking forward to watching them grow, and the chance to compete again. Go Islanders!" said head coach
Steve Moore.
The Islanders are 4-0 against the Howard Payne men and 2-0 on the women's side. Neither team has ever dropped a point to the Yellowjackets.
The Islanders women will be carrying a 35-match home winning streak into tomorrow after last week's win over Prairie View extended on the run from the previous two seasons.
