A&M-Corpus Christi Prepped for South Texas Showdown

EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men and women's tennis teams will take their undefeated starts to the season on the road, facing UTRGV Sunday at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center.

The women will get underway at 11 a.m. with the men starting after at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will count towards the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, an annual rivalry series in which the institutions compete against each other in 12 sports. A&M-Corpus Christi leads the all-time series 5-2 and is leading this year's competition 18.5 to 14.5.

"This is a great rivalry series, and the players love the intensity of these matches! UTRGV has two very good teams and always compete very hard at home. It's always a tough place to play down there and we know we've got to be fully committed to controlling what we can control, bringing a great mental attitude, and playing every present point with intensity!" said head coach Steve Moore.

The men are 4-0 to begin 2024, sweeping Prairie View A&M in a pair of doubleheader matches. The women are in a similar situation but hold strong at 3-0 due to a scheduling conflict cancelling their fourth match against the Prairie View women.

Senior Emma Aucagne and freshman Ana Veroux have each gone 3-0 in their respective singles matches. The men have spread the opportunity and have had every athlete compete in a singles dual. Freshmen Iannis Fernandes and Nicolas Trebuchet are both 3-0 on the year as is newcomer senior Antoine Vicaire.

Senior Avery Zavala won the opening SLC Men's Tennis Player of the Week award this year after dominating 6-1, 6-1 in the season opener before finishing it with a 6-2, 6-0 sweep in the backend of the doubleheader at the No.1 spot.

Overall, the men are 17-0 in singles already this year while the women are 10-0 in the duals.

Under Moore, the Islanders are 26-1 all-time against UTRGV on the women's side and 25-3 on the men's side.
